What are IPL Treatments?

You've resolved to look your best this year but how do you choose between the many beneficial esthetic treatments that are available? Regardless of your budget, you should start by identifying the improvements you want to make. If Rosacea, sun damaged skin, uneven pigmentation, acne, or large pores are on your list, a series of monthly IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments may be your answer. Commonly referred to as photofacials, IPL treatments are effective for the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.

Like lasers, IPL treatments use light to stimulate the production of new collagen and target darker pigments in the skin. Unlike lasers, the light from an IPL is not focused into a small, intense beam and a range of light frequencies are emitted. This allows an IPL treatment to reduce pigment variations and close off tiny, red surface veins without burning the skin. The gentle, even heating of the dermis stimulates new collagen production for firmer, smoother skin with fewer wrinkles and smaller pores. IPL light frequencies kill acne bacteria and IPL procedures have been described as the most significant advancement in acne treatment for decades.

A series of three to six monthly treatments can produce dramatic results. You can regain clear, smooth, evenly pigmented skin and the flushing and redness of Rosacea can be reduced by 80-90%. IPL treatments have no downtime and only require 30 to 45 minutes so you can schedule them for lunch breaks. Most clients describe the sensation of the IPL pulses as a small, relatively painless snap and the skin will feel quite warm for several hours.

Darker skin, including a sun tan, reduces the effectiveness of photorejuvenation procedures so winter is the ideal time to begin a series of IPL treatments. The cost of a single treatment for the face varies from $150 to $300 or more but most practices offer discounts for multiple treatment packages.

You should consult with a trained medical professional before undergoing any aesthetic procedure to ensure that the treatment is appropriate for your skin and your goals. For information about all the IPL treatments offered at Skin Care By Design, click IPL.
