Botox Cosmetic® For Wrinkles

What is Botox Cosmetic®?

Botox Cosmetic® is botulinum toxin type A, a highly purified protein that blocks messages between the muscles and the nerves that control them, thereby relaxing facial expression lines. Botox is commonly used for lines across the forehead, wrinkles between the eyes, "bunny lines" across the nose, crow's feet around the eyes, and fine lines around the mouth.

We only use Botox Cosmetic purchased directly from the manufacturer, Allergan Pharmaceuticals.

What results can you expect?

The effects of Botox injections normally become apparent after three to seven days and normally last for three to six months. When facial muscles contract, they form creases that eventually create wrinkles. Relaxing those muscles eliminates facial creases and the wrinkles in those creases gradually fade. The relaxation also prevents the muscles from forming new creases and wrinkles.

How many treatments do you need?

The amount of relaxation and the length of time the relaxation lasts depend on three factors:

  1. The size and strength of the muscle being injected.
  2. Your sensitivity to the medication.
  3. The amount of Botox medication injected into the muscle.

The first two factors vary between individuals so you may require more or less medication than another person to produce the same results. The effects of Botox injections normally last for three to six months.

Like any other muscle that is not exercised, muscles treated with Botox become weaker over time. If you follow a good maintenance program, your next injections will occur when the relaxation begins to wear off but just before the muscles can form wrinkles again. At this time, there are still residual effects from the earlier injections. Weaker muscles with residual effects from earlier treatments often require less medication than the original injections to produce the same results.

Things you should know.

Side effects are generally limited to the injection site and may include slight swelling or bruising. Bruising is more likely if you take blood thinning substances including vitamin E, aspirin, NSAIDs (e.g., Naproxen, Advil, Aleve, Motrim, or Naprosyn), or prescription medications such as coumadin. Headaches lasting several hours may occur. In rare instances, adjacent muscles may be weakened for several weeks after an injection. Botox treatments are contraindicated if you have muscle diseases such as Lou Gehrig's, Eaton-Lamber syndrome, myasthenia gravis or you are taking medications that interfere with neuromuscular transmissions (e.g., polymysins, quinidine, anticholinesterases, magnesium sulfate).

About one person in ten thousand (.01%) can form antibodies that inactivate Botox and prevent it from relaxing the injected muscles.

Makeup may be applied after the treatment, but you should avoid pressing or rubbing the area for several hours.

Botox Cosmetic® For Hyperhidrosis

What is Botox Cosmetic®?

Botox Cosmetic® is botulinum toxin type A, a highly purified protein that blocks messages between the sweat glands and the nerves that control them. Excessive sweating can be alleviated with injections of highly diluted Botox directly into the skin. Overstimulation of sweat glands is responsible for the excessive perspiration experienced by some people and Botox blocks the release of the chemical that stimulates the nerves controlling the sweat glands.

What results can you expect?

The effects of Botox injections for hyperhidrosis normally become apparent after three to seven days and normally last for six to seven months.

Clinical studies show that 55% of patients treated with Botox achieve complete relief of excessive underarm sweating and 81% of patients achieve greater than a 50% reduction in underarm sweating. The relief lasted more than 201 days (6.7 months) for over 50% of the study patients.

How many treatments do you need?

Doctors believe that injections can be repeated indefinitely two or three times a year to maintain dryness.

Things you should know.

The use of Botox for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating is safe and FDA approved.

About one person in ten thousand (.01%) can form antibodies that inactivate Botox and prevent it from controlling excessive perspiration.

How much time is required?

Appointments are normally 45 minutes.

How much does it cost?

$899 for 100 units of Botox Cosmetic. That's less than $9 per unit! The price is so low that Hyperhidrosis treatments cannot be included in our monthly Botox Clinic discounts.
