Mesotherapy
What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a means of delivering vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, enzymes, amino acids, and medicines into the middle layer of the skin (mesoderm) at specifically targeted areas of the body. Different medications are administered at different depths, depending on the treatment being performed.
Mesotherapy is the only proven technique to reduce cellulite and it also targets stubborn fat pockets. It is an effective anti-aging treatment that stimulates metabolism and promotes the production of collagen and elastin. As a non-surgical method for spot fat reduction, it is often referred to as Lipotherapy or Lipodissolve. The pharmaceutical agents injected into the mesoderm cause necrosis of fat cells. The fat in those cells dissolves, is metabolized, and is safely eliminated by the kidneys.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the dimpled, cottage cheese, or orange peel appearance of the skin that is experienced by approximately 90% of all women. Cellulite occurs when subcutaneous fat cells become trapped by bands of connective tissue in the skin. Cellulite is found in people who are slender or overweight, active or sedentary. The primary cause of cellulite is thought to be hormonal. Secondary causes of cellulite include:
- Poor circulation due to heredity. The presence of spider veins or varicose veins is indicative of poor circulation.
- High fat diets increase the number of fat cells and encourage weight gain. This causes an increase in turgor (cell wall pressure), which makes it more difficult for fat to leave the cells.
- Smoking inhibits circulation, causing decreased oxygenation. This leads to increased development of the irregular bands of connective tissue.
What are the benefits of Mesotherapy?
- No surgery. Mesotherapy uses a very tiny needle (.4 to .6 mm).
- No downtime.
- Successfully targets cellulite and pockets of fat. The medicines used in Mesotherapy break up the connective tissue bands responsible for cellulite in the treated area and increase fat cell membrane permeability, allowing fat to leave the cells more easily.
- Promotes the production of collagen and elastin.
Who are the best candidates for Mesotherapy?
Healthy persons who are of stable weight, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 30, with unwanted fat deposits or cellulite. This treatment is not designed for weight loss. Those with a higher BMI are encouraged to follow a regimen of healthy diet and exercise before considering Mesotherapy for specific areas.
How many treatments do you need?
Several treatments are typically required at three month intervals but a multitude of factors enter into this determination. The amount of fat or cellulite in the treated areas, your response to the medications, the amount of improvement you are seeking, your age and metabolism, and your lifestyle are just some of the items that impact the number, type, and scheduling of Mesotherapy sessions. Your skin care nurse will discuss all of these with you to help determine if Mesotherapy is appropriate for your needs.
Things you should know.
The use of Mesotherapy for spot fat reduction may produce minor swelling, itching, bruising, or redness lasting several days and soreness lasting up to two weeks. As the medications break down the fat cells, they can form tiny, harmless nodules in the mesoderm (you cannot see them but they may be felt when you press the skin). The medications continue to dissolve these cells for about three months so any nodules that form normally disappear within a few months.
